About the role#
The Naval Architecture and Structural Design Directorate manages the engineering and design of hull and internal or external structures for submarines. This team oversees weights, hydrodynamics, and hydrostatics. Interns work in a design and build environment to solve structural and mechanical problems using computational simulations and material sciences.
What you'll do#
- Perform calculations to support submarine structures.
- Assist in design development from concept through construction support, overhaul, and repair.
- Create 3D models or 2D drawings for the fabrication of submarine structures.
- Conduct static and dynamic finite element structural analysis using advanced techniques.
- Analyze submarine movement, flow over appendages, speed, power, and maneuvering performance.
- Manage hydrostatic balance, stability, submerged equilibrium, and tank capacity.
- Develop plans for barge loading, ballasting, and cargo securing for the transit of submarine components.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment as a full-time student in a Bachelor or Master of Science program for Civil, Mechanical, Aerospace, Aeronautical, Ocean, or Naval Engineering.
- Completion of at least your Freshman year before the internship starts.
- Ability to work 40 hours per week for at least eight consecutive weeks between May 2027 and September 2027.
- US citizenship and the ability to obtain a DOD secret clearance.
- Ability to pass a medically supervised drug screen and background check.
- Minimum age of 18.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite.
Location & details#
- This is a paid, full-time, on-site internship for Summer 2027.
- Placements are located in Groton, CT, New London, CT, North Stonington, CT, North Kingstown, RI, and Newport, RI.
- You are responsible for your own housing and transportation.
