About the role#
As a Manufacturing Engineering Intern at Freeform, you will help scale production for high-performance metal 3D printed parts. You will work with our engineering team to develop and refine the processes, tooling, and CNC machining workflows that enable precision manufacturing. This is a hands-on role focused on optimizing post-processing and machining operations to bridge the gap between R&D and production.
What you'll do#
- Support the design and implementation of scalable manufacturing processes for new hardware and printed parts.
- Assist with fixturing, test procedures, and post-processing steps to improve part flow through the factory.
- Build and iterate on tooling, jigs, and test setups for reliable, high-throughput production.
- Identify bottlenecks in part, material, and data flow while working with cross-functional teams to improve them.
- Develop documentation and process standards to support production scaling.
- Contribute to CNC machining workflows, including programming, setup, and optimization of multi-axis operations for post-processing.
- Support early production efforts and help transition R&D into high-rate manufacturing.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a bachelor’s degree program in mechanical, aerospace, or manufacturing engineering from an ABET accredited university.
- Hands-on manufacturing or build experience from internships or engineering clubs like FSAE, Baja SAE, solar car, rocket club, or robotics.
- Experience working with hand tools, machinery, or complex hardware assembly.
- Ability to translate high-level engineering goals into practical factory processes.
- Strong communication skills and a willingness to take ownership of tasks.
Additional experience that is helpful includes:
- Advanced degrees (Master's or PhD) in mechanical, aerospace, or manufacturing engineering.
- CNC machining, including 3 or 5-axis programming and setup.
- Metal additive manufacturing or precision post-processing.
- Exposure to fixturing, DFM, or process validation.
- Familiarity with MRP/ERP tools and manufacturing process development.
Location & details#
- This internship is based on-site in Hawthorne, California.
- The term for this role is Winter 2027.
- This is a full-time, paid position.
