About the role#
The Biodiversity Defense Program at Earthjustice is seeking a part-time legal extern for the spring 2027 term. This program focuses on litigation to address the biodiversity crisis, including habitat destruction and the over-exploitation of wildlife. You will work alongside litigators and staff to develop core lawyering skills while contributing to the team's ongoing cases.
What you'll do#
- Complete research and litigation-related assignments under the direct supervision of an attorney.
- Participate in legal strategy discussions.
- Observe court proceedings.
- Sit in on meetings with clients or opposing counsel.
- Develop your strategic thinking and legal writing abilities.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in law school as a 2L or 3L for the spring 2027 term.
- Ability to receive academic credit or fulfill a graduation requirement through this externship.
- Commitment to working between 12 and 22.5 hours per week.
- Strong research, writing, analytical, and organizational skills.
- Proficiency with legal research tools such as Westlaw.
- An interest in public interest law and social justice.
- Knowledge of environmental and administrative law is helpful but not required.
Location & details#
This externship is unpaid. You may work remotely from within the United States or on a hybrid schedule from our offices in Bozeman, Denver, New York, San Francisco, or Seattle.
