About the role#
Cornell Cooperative Extension is seeking interns for a shellfish grow-out program in Northport, New York. This initiative focuses on raising oysters to enhance water quality and support the local oyster population. Interns will gain hands-on experience in aquaculture techniques, including grow-out procedures, monitoring growth and survival rates, and tracking environmental parameters such as salinity, water temperature, and dissolved oxygen.
What you'll do#
- Collaborate with the Cornell Shellfish Biologist and Aquaculture Assistant.
- Support the maintenance and daily operation of the shellfish grow-out system (FLUPSY).
- Collect scientific monitoring data related to shellfish and water quality.
- Assist staff in providing general project information to the public.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in high school or college.
- Residency in the Village of Northport.
- Ability to work outdoors under variable field conditions and perform physical tasks.
- Capacity to lift 40 lbs and handle heavy equipment.
- Strong ability to follow detailed instructions.
- Foundational knowledge in natural science, plant science, or marine science.
- Ability to work both independently and with supervision, as well as interact effectively with the public.

- Location: Northport, New York.
- Term: Summer 2026 (July 1, 2026, through August 28, 2026).
- Modality: On-site.
- Schedule: Part-time, 12-20 hours per week.
- Compensation: Paid at $17.00 per hour.
