Cornell Cooperative Extension offers a paid internship program in Northport, NY, focused on a shellfish grow-out initiative. This program aims to enhance water quality and support the local oyster population. Interns will gain practical experience in aquaculture techniques, including monitoring growth rates, survival rates, and environmental parameters such as water temperature, salinity, and dissolved oxygen.
What you'll do#
- Work directly with the Cornell Shellfish Biologist and Aquaculture Assistant.
- Assist with the maintenance and upkeep of the shellfish grow-out system (FLUPSY).
- Collect scientific monitoring data regarding shellfish health and water quality.
- Support educators in providing information about the program to the public.
What you'll need#
- Must be a Village of Northport resident currently enrolled in high school or college.
- Knowledge of natural science, plant science, or marine science.
- Ability to work outdoors under potentially adverse field conditions.
- Capability to perform physical tasks, including lifting up to 40 lbs. and handling heavy gear.
- Ability to follow instructions carefully and work with varying levels of supervision.
- Strong communication skills for interacting with the public.

- Location: Northport, New York.
- Term: Summer 2026 (July 1, 2026 – August 28, 2026).
- Work Modality: On-site.
- Commitment: Part-time, 12-20 hours per week.
