About the role#
The Student Intern in Oncology at Lutheran Hospital works alongside a Registered Nurse to gain hands-on clinical experience. This role focuses on developing time management, assessment, and charting skills while providing patient-centered care. Interns are expected to work one 12-hour shift per week.
What you'll do#
- Assist nursing staff by performing delegated basic patient care services.
- Collect and record patient data such as vital signs, weight, height, oxygen saturation, intake and output, and calorie counts.
- Support patients with daily activities including meals, feeding, bathing, oral care, grooming, and skin care.
- Assist with patient mobility, including positioning, ambulating, and the use of assistive devices.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized environment while adhering to infection control and safety protocols.
- Communicate patient information effectively to the care team and report findings to nursing staff.
- Perform clinical tasks such as blood glucose monitoring and collecting urine or stool samples.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in the final year of a nursing program.
- Completion of Pharmacology and Medical-Surgical 1 coursework.
- Basic knowledge of patient care practices and equipment.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to multitask.
- Ability to follow detailed instructions and work collaboratively within a team.
- Requirement to obtain Basic Life Support (BCLS) certification within 90 days of hire.
- Preference for candidates with 0-2 years of experience in an acute care setting, or those holding a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) or Certified Patient Care Technician (CPCT) certification.
