About the role#
As a Nurse Extern I in Surgical Care, you will assist nursing staff by performing patient care activities. This role allows you to gain clinical experience while working under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse. You will contribute to patient assessments, provide personal care, and support the team in delivering quality service at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital.
What you'll do#
- Greet and orient new patients to the hospital environment.
- Perform routine nursing assistant tasks and patient care activities as delegated.
- Collect data during physical assessments for review and co-signature by an RN.
- Ensure documentation is accurate, complete, and timely.
- Assist nursing staff in identifying patient physical, psychosocial, and cultural needs.
- Provide personal care and assist with patient mobility and activity.
- Administer medications and assist with oxygen modalities or sterile dressing changes under direct RN supervision.
- Report abnormal findings or changes in patient conditions to the nursing staff.
- Assist with nonpharmacological interventions.
What you'll need#
- Completion of the first semester of a nursing program.
- Continued enrollment in a nursing program.
- Ability to think critically and exercise decisive judgment.
- Capacity to work in a demanding environment and take appropriate action.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification as a Healthcare Provider, required within 90 days of hire.

- Location: Owensboro, Kentucky.
- Modality: On-site.
- Employment: Part-time, per diem/PRN (less than 40 hours per pay period).
- Schedule: 7a-7p or 7p-7a shifts.
- Compensation: This is a paid position.
