About the role#
The Nurse Extern program offers nursing students a paid opportunity to gain clinical experience while completing their degree. You will work alongside nurses and clinical educators to build your skills through direct patient care and specialty shadowing. The program spans approximately 18 months and focuses on strengthening your clinical judgment and preparing you for a transition into graduate nursing.
What you'll do#
You will work under the direction of an RN to support patient care and unit operations. Your responsibilities include:
- Assist with activities of daily living, including hygiene, mobility, and feeding.
- Monitor vital signs, oxygen saturation, and weight.
- Measure intake and output and perform blood glucose testing.
- Collect specimens and perform phlebotomy.
- Maintain a clean and safe care environment.
- Document and report patient data accurately.
- Participate in performance improvement and risk management reporting.
- Assist with patient positioning and ambulation.
- Perform EKGs, bladder scanning, and cardiac rhythm interpretation as you complete competency levels.
- Assist with Foley and peripheral IV removal or placement.
- Provide continuous patient observation when required.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an accredited pre-licensure RN program.
- Completion or progress in Nursing Foundations coursework.
- Ability to work at least one shift per pay period during the semester and two 12-hour shifts during school breaks.
- Commitment to work one major holiday and one night shift during the program.
- Participation in one-on-one preceptor training.
- BLS certification within seven days of hire.
- BCLS certification within 90 days of hire.
- Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Professionalism, dependable attendance, and a commitment to patient safety.
- CNA or Certified Patient Care Technician (CPCT) credentials are preferred.
