About the role#
The Committee for Public Counsel Services Fall River Public Defender Division is seeking law student interns for the Winter 2027 term. Interns work alongside experienced attorneys, social workers, and investigators to provide legal representation to indigent clients facing felony and misdemeanor charges in District and Superior Courts. You will gain hands-on experience in a public defense setting while receiving direct supervision and training.
What you'll do#
- Conduct client interviews.
- Assist with arraignment and bail arguments.
- Perform legal research and draft pretrial motions, affidavits, and memoranda.
- Conduct pretrial investigations including visits to crime scenes and witness interviews.
- Assist with pretrial motion arguments.
- Maintain strict confidentiality regarding all client information and case work.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in law school.
- Completion of or current enrollment in an evidence or trial practice class.
- Written approval from your Dean to represent clients under SJC Rule 3:03.
- Interest in criminal law, constitutional law, or trial advocacy.
