About the role#
The San Francisco Chronicle is looking for an intern to join Datebook, our guide to arts, entertainment, and culture in the Bay Area. This role focuses on covering film, music, theater, and other local cultural topics. You will gain experience through training and mentoring from editors and colleagues. We encourage all college students, including those at community colleges or recent graduates, to apply.
What you'll do#
- Report on breaking news and trending topics within the Bay Area arts community.
- Write news features and reviews that reflect the diversity of local audiences.
- Cover live events across the Bay Area.
- Collaborate with editors to develop coverage ideas, refine your writing, and build reporting instincts.
- Contribute to projects using video, audio, and other multimedia formats.
- Manage tasks including brainstorming, researching, writing, art directing collaborators, and project coordination.
What you'll need#
- Strong writing skills.
- A commitment to accuracy, fairness, and inclusiveness.
- Newsroom experience with a high school or college publication or previous internships is strongly preferred.
- Curiosity and a proactive approach to finding untold stories.
- Interest in developing skills to engage readers through headlines, visuals, and multimedia.
Location & details#
- Location: San Francisco, California.
- Modality: Hybrid.
- Term: Summer 2027 (12 weeks, 40 hours per week).
- Availability: You must be able to work out of the San Francisco and greater Bay Area. Weekend, evening, and holiday work is required as events warrant.
- Compensation: This is a paid position at $20.50 per hour.
- Majors: Journalism, Communications, Media Studies, and English.
