About the role#
The Hearst Developer Fellowship is a one-year program based in the San Francisco DevHub. You will join the editorial innovation team to build AI-assisted tools, news products, and interactive experiences. Fellows work alongside journalist-programmers to support projects for various metro newsrooms, including the San Francisco Chronicle and the Houston Chronicle. This is a full-time, paid position with a focus on training and mentorship. The program aims to prepare participants for potential full-time roles within the company at the end of the term.
What you'll do#
- Create AI tools for newsrooms and digital experiences for readers.
- Collaborate with newsrooms to establish best practices for AI usage.
- Improve existing tools and interactives by applying new methods to workflows, data analysis, and visualization.
- Develop new technology to support journalists and the communities they cover.
What you'll need#
- A college degree.
- Experience or background in AI, data journalism, and programming.
- Relevant academic focus in Journalism, Computer Science, Data Science, Communications, or Media Studies.
- A portfolio or digital work samples demonstrating your skills.
- Willingness to relocate to the San Francisco Bay Area.
