About the role#
This is a 12-week, full-time summer internship for the Summer 2027 term. You will join the Autonomy and Intelligent Systems Engineering team to work on Physical AI platforms for construction and mining equipment. This role involves building the intelligence layers that connect machines, data, and people to improve jobsite safety and productivity.
What you'll do#
- Develop AI-powered technologies that enable machines to perceive, understand, and interact with the physical world autonomously.
- Drive innovation in autonomous hauling, machine positioning, safety systems, remote operations, and site technologies.
- Contribute to projects involving machine perception, autonomous decision-making, navigation, machine control, and high-fidelity simulation.
- Collaborate within a team-oriented environment to build intelligence layers for heavy construction equipment.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment or prior participation in a Caterpillar student program.
- Full-time enrollment at a 4-year university in Computer Science, Robotics Engineering, Mechatronic Engineering, or a related field.
- Completion of at least 12 credit hours prior to the start of the program.
- A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0.
- Ability to relocate to the internship location and manage a daily commute.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with experience in tools such as Machine Learning, Deep Learning, MATLAB, Simulink, or C++.

- Locations: Mossville, IL; Peoria, IL; Pittsburgh, PA; Irving, TX; San Francisco, CA.
- Work Modality: This position is on-site, five days a week.
- Compensation: This is a paid internship.
