About the role#
This summer internship focuses on the development of next-generation sensing systems for consumer electronics using metasurface technology. You will contribute to the design of imaging and non-imaging optical technologies while applying your academic research to practical engineering challenges. This role involves working alongside our design team to refine software toolkits and expand system design capabilities.
What you'll do#
- Apply your PhD research to real-world technical problems.
- Collaborate with consumer electronic OEMs to commercialize metasurface optics.
- Design optical systems for emerging consumer applications such as 3D sensing.
- Integrate new developments into our software toolkit to improve system design.
- Apply home-grown techniques to meta-optic system design for consumer products.
- Use modern software stacks and computing developments to explore new areas in optical design.
- Support internal fabrication and metrology teams by developing custom in-house software.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a PhD program for Physics, Applied Physics, Applied Mathematics, or a related field.
- Demonstrated technical excellence through publications or open-source contributions.
- Experience in metasurface physics, optimization, diffractive optics, or computational electromagnetics.
- Familiarity with high-performance computing environments, specifically Julia and AWS.
- Proficiency in MATLAB or Python.
- Experience with E&M software such as Lumerical, CST Studio, Tidy3D, or MEEP.
- A desire to propose, develop, and test new design and analysis techniques.
Location & details#
- Location: Boston, Massachusetts.
- Term: Summer 2027.
- Modality: Hybrid and remote options available.
- Compensation: $5,500 to $8,500 per month.
- Employment: Full-time paid position.
