    About the role#

    Cal Poly Pomona Enterprises is hiring Student Research Assistants for the Simulation and Modeling Grant. This role supports the development of safe, intelligent, and highly capable Level 5 autonomous vehicles. You will work under the supervision of your advisor and Dr. Behnam Bahr. This opportunity can be combined with a Senior Project or a Master’s Thesis with approval.

    What you'll do#

    • Develop tools and systems for electric vehicles to reach Level 5 autonomy.
    • Simulate Ackermann style vehicles in virtual environments like Gazebo.
    • Process images and point cloud data from Radar, Lidar, and thermal sensors.
    • Research modular, end-to-end, and hybrid architectures.
    • Implement path planning algorithms and program sensor fusion.
    • Design automated repair and replacement systems for vehicle parts.
    • Develop and test real-time teleoperation.
    • Work in the lab 10 hours per week, including 8 core hours and 2 hours for meetings or seminars.
    • Document work, submit assignments to team leaders, and present progress to the group.
    • Submit research papers to conferences and symposiums.

    What you'll need#

    • Enrollment in courses during Fall 2026 and Spring 2027.
    • Full-time student status or graduation within one year.
    • A visit to the Ganpat and Manju Center (9-101) and meetings with current students before applying.
    • Proficiency in Object Oriented Programming for C++ or Python.
    • Experience designing tools, modeling assemblies, or building robotic systems.
    • Ability to reference datasheets and analyze board schematics.
    • Experience integrating sensors with standards like I2C, I2S, SPI, CAN, or UART.
    • Comfort with embedded systems such as Arduino, ESP32, Raspberry Pi, or Jetson Orin.
    • Experience maintaining Github repositories and proficiency with MQTT.
    • Interest in suspension systems, tire structures, closed-loop controls, or ROS2.
    • A portfolio of work is required for Marketing or Art candidates.
