    About the role#

    The RePlant Project is an interdisciplinary initiative exploring the relationship between culture, history, ecology, and restoration. As a team member, you will contribute to the Duke Campus Farm's Cackalacky Heritage Garden and the Southeastern American Indian Garden. You will work alongside faculty, researchers, and community members to honor the agricultural traditions and foodways of Black and Native communities in the American South. This role is open to both undergraduate and graduate students.

    What you'll do#

    • Participate in a faculty and graduate student working group focused on critical restoration.
    • Conduct humanities-based research tied to project goals.
    • Maintain and care for crops with cultural significance.
    • Facilitate or co-facilitate at least one public-facing workshop.
    • Work with farm staff to develop and document garden protocols.
    • Create a teaching module for future visitors and staff.
    • Present research findings and project outcomes to the working group.
    • Participate in the OCS Research and Campus Impact Showcase.
    • Complete program assessment surveys and a final written reflection.

    What you'll need#

    • Current enrollment as an undergraduate or graduate student.
    • Interest in environmental, public, or cultural humanities.
    • Enthusiasm for collaborative research and experiential learning.
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Ability to work independently and within a multidisciplinary team.
    • Willingness to engage in outdoor garden-based work.
    • Interest in sustainability, restoration, foodways, agriculture, and community engagement.

    Location & details#

    • Location: Durham, North Carolina.
    • Work Modality: On-site.
    • Commitment: Approximately 1 to 4 hours per week, including 6 to 7 working group meetings throughout the academic year.
