    About the role#

    This research assistant position supports an urban heat study in partnership with the DC Department of Transportation. You will work under the direction of a graduate research assistant to collect meteorological measurements across Washington, DC. The role is part-time, requiring 20 to 30 hours per week during the summer of 2027.

    What you'll do#

    • Operate handheld infrared thermometers to measure surface temperatures.
    • Complete field survey forms and record site conditions, shading, and observations.
    • Assist with instrument setup, deployment, and pack-down at each location.
    • Transport field equipment using a wheeled field cart.
    • Follow standardized measurement protocols consistently.
    • Assist with equipment preparation and loading before field days.
    • Support data entry and perform basic quality checks.
    • Communicate equipment issues or site concerns to the research team.

    What you'll need#

    • You must be an enrolled American University undergraduate student in good academic standing.
    • Reliability and punctuality are essential for field operations.
    • You must be able to work outdoors in hot and humid summer conditions for extended periods.
    • You should be comfortable working on or near public streets in an urban environment.
    • Strong attention to detail and the ability to follow standardized procedures.
    • Prior research or fieldwork experience is preferred but not required.
