About the role#
BluePearl Pet Hospital is seeking a DVM Summer Student to join the team for an 8 to 12 week program. This role is designed for students currently enrolled in an AVMA accredited DVM or VMD program who are looking to gain hands-on experience in specialty and emergency medicine. Students will work alongside doctors, veterinary technicians, and assistants to support patient care and client communication.
What you'll do#
- Utilize knowledge of basic veterinary terminology and abbreviations.
- Safely restrain canine and feline patients.
- Perform basic physical examinations and collect patient vital signs.
- Triage patients and collect patient histories from clients.
- Input data into medical record systems and document treatments and communications.
- Assist clinicians and technicians with exam and diagnostic workup processes.
- Communicate discharge instructions to clients.
- Perform phlebotomy, place intravenous catheters, and administer subcutaneous fluids or injections.
- Operate equipment including fluid pumps, syringe pumps, and monitoring devices such as SpO2 and ETCO2 monitors.
- Run in-house diagnostic tests including CBC, chemistry panels, urinalysis, and coagulation profiles.
- Obtain diagnostic quality radiographs using proper techniques and personal protective equipment.
- Support the clinical team during advanced procedures, life support, and the euthanasia process.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment as a full-time student in an AVMA accredited DVM or VMD program.
- Availability for a minimum of 8 weeks and a maximum of 12 weeks between May and September 2026.
- While no prior emergency or specialty medicine experience is required, previous animal experience is preferred.
