BluePearl Pet Hospital is seeking a DVM Summer Student to join the team for an 8 to 12-week program. This temporary, full-time position immerses students in specialty and emergency medicine, allowing them to build clinical skills and gain industry knowledge alongside doctors, veterinary technicians, and assistants.
What you'll do#
- Possess and apply knowledge of basic veterinary terminology and abbreviations.
- Safely and appropriately restrain canine and feline patients.
- Obtain diagnostic quality radiographs using proper techniques and personal protective equipment.
- Perform physical examinations to collect vital signs and triage patients.
- Collect patient histories and input data into medical records.
- Assist clinicians and technicians with diagnostic workups, examinations, and patient care.
- Administer treatments, including subcutaneous fluids and injections (SQ, IM, or IV).
- Perform phlebotomy and place intravenous catheters.
- Operate basic equipment such as fluid pumps, SpO2 monitors, and ETCO2 monitors.
- Run in-house diagnostic tests including CBC, chemistry panels, urinalysis, and coagulation profiles.
- Communicate discharge instructions to clients and provide support during the euthanasia process.
- Participate in basic and advanced life support as directed by a clinician.
What you'll need#
- Must be a full-time student currently enrolled in an AVMA accredited DVM/VMD program.
- Availability for a minimum of 8 weeks and a maximum of 12 weeks between May and September.
- No prior emergency or specialty medicine experience is required, though general animal experience is preferred.
