DVM Summer Student

About the role#

BluePearl Pet Hospital is offering a temporary summer position for students currently enrolled in an AVMA-accredited DVM/VMD program. This role is designed to immerse students in specialty and emergency medicine, allowing them to build clinical skills and technical knowledge alongside experienced doctors and veterinary staff.

What you'll do#

• Assist doctors, veterinary technicians, and assistants with all aspects of patient care and client communication.
• Triage patients both over the phone and in-person.
• Collect patient histories and perform basic physical examinations to gather vital signs.
• Document treatments, adjustments, and communications with clients, doctors, or primary care veterinarians.
• Support the exam and diagnostic workup process, including performing phlebotomy, placing intravenous catheters, and administering injections.
• Operate basic clinical equipment such as fluid pumps, monitors, and in-house diagnostic tools for CBC, chemistry, and urinalysis.
• Obtain diagnostic quality radiographs using proper techniques.
• Communicate discharge instructions to clients and provide support during the euthanasia process.
• Participate in basic and advanced life support as directed by a clinician.

What you'll need#

• Must be a full-time student enrolled in an AVMA-accredited DVM/VMD program.
• Ability to commit to a duration of 8 to 12 weeks between May and September.
• Knowledge of basic veterinary terminology and the ability to safely restrain canine and feline patients.
• While no prior emergency or specialty medicine experience is required, previous animal experience is preferred.
