About the role#
BluePearl Pet Hospital is offering a temporary summer position for students currently enrolled in an AVMA accredited DVM or VMD program. This role provides immersion in specialty and emergency medicine to build clinical skills and technical knowledge. Students will work on-site for a duration of 8 to 12 weeks between May and September 2026.
What you'll do#
- Assist doctors, veterinary technicians, and veterinary assistants with patient care and client communication.
- Triage patients over the phone and in-person.
- Document treatments administered, treatment adjustments, and communications with doctors, clients, or primary care veterinarians.
- Perform physical examinations to collect vital signs and patient history.
- Assist with exam and diagnostic workup processes, including phlebotomy and intravenous catheter placement.
- Operate basic equipment such as fluid pumps, syringe pumps, and monitoring devices.
- Run in-house diagnostic tests including CBC, chemistry panels, urinalysis, and blood gases.
- Obtain diagnostic quality radiographs.
- Support clinicians and clients through the euthanasia process and deliver discharge instructions.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment as a full-time student in an AVMA accredited DVM or VMD program.
- Availability for a minimum of 8 weeks and a maximum of 12 weeks between May and September.
- Ability to safely restrain canine and feline patients.
- Proficiency in basic veterinary terminology, abbreviations, and medical math.
- While no prior emergency or specialty medicine experience is required, animal experience is preferred.
