About the role#
Barr is seeking a geotechnical engineering intern to join our team for the summer of 2027. You will work with a group of over 90 geotechnical engineers and geologists on multidisciplinary projects. This role involves both computer modeling and fieldwork to provide hands-on experience in the Engineering and Design business unit.
What you'll do#
- Provide on-site support for construction observation, material testing, surveying, and subsurface investigations.
- Perform geotechnical field investigations, including collecting samples and logging exploratory test borings.
- Conduct basic engineering calculations and analysis, develop design details, and assist in creating solutions.
- Monitor construction projects and prepare drawings, specifications, and sketches.
- Assist with planning, coordinating, and executing projects to ensure milestones are met.
- Collaborate with project teams and clients to align technical work with project objectives.
What you'll need#
- Ongoing enrollment in an ABET-accredited geotechnical, civil, or geological engineering degree program.
- Coursework or research related to advanced soil mechanics.
- At least two semesters of physics and three semesters of mathematics.
- A minimum of one full-time semester of undergraduate or graduate coursework remaining after the internship.
- A current, valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Windows and Office software.
- Ability to work in locations with rough terrain, moving machinery, and industrial conditions.
- Legal authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.
Location & details#
- This is a full-time, paid internship located in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
- The position runs for approximately three months during the summer of 2027.
- This role is hybrid, splitting time between a Barr office and a home office.
- You must be willing to travel and occasionally adjust your schedule to meet project needs.
