The Lab Engineer (Intern) supports geotechnical engineering initiatives by conducting soil testing in an in-house laboratory. This position involves hands-on sample preparation, executing tests following industry standards, and maintaining laboratory equipment. The role is designed for students pursuing degrees in geology, civil engineering, environmental sciences, or materials sciences. Successful interns may be considered for future full-time opportunities.
What you'll do#
- Process and prepare soil and rock samples upon receipt at the laboratory.
- Perform geotechnical tests in adherence to ASTM or AASHTO protocols.
- Maintain and clean laboratory equipment, including washing reusable items.
- Document test procedures, observations, and results while ensuring data accuracy.
- Adhere to all safety protocols to maintain a secure working environment.
- Manage daily laboratory operations, including packaging field equipment, restocking supplies, and coordinating soil disposal.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing a degree in civil engineering, environmental engineering, geology, environmental sciences, or materials sciences.
- Strong attention to detail for precise sample preparation and testing.
- Ability to communicate effectively with team members to report findings.
- Commitment to strict safety compliance.
- Prior experience in a laboratory setting, specifically geotechnical or material testing, is considered an advantage.
- Ability to stand and walk for 6–8 hours, perform frequent kneeling and squatting, and independently lift or move weights between 25 and 50 lbs.
