The Lab Engineer (Intern) supports geotechnical engineering initiatives by conducting soil testing in an in-house laboratory. This position focuses on sample preparation, executing tests according to industry standards, and maintaining laboratory equipment. This is a hands-on, full-time, on-site role based in Columbus, Ohio, available for the Fall 2025 and Winter 2025 terms.
What you'll do#
- Process and prepare soil and rock samples upon receipt.
- Execute geotechnical tests following established ASTM or AASHTO protocols.
- Maintain and clean laboratory equipment, including washing reusable items.
- Document test procedures, observations, and results with a focus on data integrity.
- Adhere to safety protocols to minimize risks in the laboratory environment.
- Manage daily operations, including packaging and shipping field equipment, restocking supplies, and coordinating soil disposal.
What you'll need#
- Current pursuit of a degree in geology, civil engineering, environmental sciences, materials sciences, or a related field.
- Strong attention to detail for precise sample preparation and testing.
- Effective communication skills for team collaboration and reporting findings.
- Ability to adhere to strict safety protocols.
- Prior experience in a laboratory setting, especially in geotechnical or material testing, is considered an advantage.
- Physical ability to stand and walk for 6–8 hours, frequently kneel and squat, and independently lift, move, push, or pull weights between 25 and 50 lbs.
