About the role#
The Race in the Marketplace Research Network (RIM) is seeking a Research Assistant to support our network communications, digital platforms, and project coordination. You will work closely with our four-person core team and a broader network of scholars to manage day-to-day operations. This role involves a mix of administrative problem-solving, website maintenance, and project support. We are looking for a candidate who is a strong writer and a dependable organizer.
What you'll do#
- Draft professional emails, announcements, and project updates.
- Develop content for social media channels and promote member publications or events.
- Translate academic research into clear, public-facing content.
- Update and organize the RIM website while identifying areas for improvement.
- Create basic graphics, cover images, and video thumbnails.
- Manage project timelines, spreadsheets, and action-item lists.
- Coordinate meetings across multiple time zones and document key decisions.
- Maintain shared files, records, and archival materials.
- Troubleshoot routine issues with digital accounts and permissions.
- Communicate project progress, barriers, and next steps to the core team.
What you'll need#
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Strong organizational and project-coordination abilities.
- Ability to manage multiple assignments, deadlines, and feedback streams.
- Strong attention to detail and a consistent approach to follow-up.
- Ability to work independently while keeping collaborators informed.
- Capacity to approach race-related topics with care, respect, and a willingness to learn.
- Experience with Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, virtual-meeting platforms, and social media.
- Familiarity with tools such as Squarespace, Canva, Google Forms, Airtable, or Doodle.
- Experience in an academic, nonprofit, or research setting is preferred.
- Familiarity with research concerning race, marketplaces, or consumer behavior is a plus.
Location & details#
- This position is located on-site in Washington, DC.
- This role is open only to currently enrolled American University students.
- The position is part-time, requiring approximately 9 hours per week.
- Compensation is $18.40 to $20.00 per hour.
