About the role#
American University is seeking an Archives Student Assistant to support the Archives & Special Collections department. This part-time role involves processing collections, maintaining archival standards, and assisting with administrative tasks. This position is open only to currently enrolled American University students.
What you'll do#
- Organize, arrange, and describe new and legacy collections.
- Handle archival materials with care and perform basic preservation measures.
- Track and document project progress using tools such as MS Excel, Word, and Teams.
- Assist staff with routine administrative functions, including welcoming visitors.
- Support reference requests by retrieving collection materials and staffing the reading room.
What you'll need#
- High school diploma or its equivalent.
- Excellent organization, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Ability to learn and adapt to new workflows, tools, and technologies.
- Ability to lift items up to 40 pounds and retrieve materials from shelves up to seven feet high.
- Ability to communicate clearly in writing and verbally.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365 applications.
Location & details#
- Location: Spring Valley Campus, Washington, DC.
- Modality: On-site, 10 hours per week.
- Schedule: Tuesday through Friday, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, in shifts of 4 hours or longer.
- Compensation: $18.40 per hour.
- Term: Rolling.
