About the role#
Aecon is seeking a Traffic Control Co-op Student for the Deerfoot Trail Improvements Project in Calgary, Alberta. This site-based position provides hands-on experience on a major transportation infrastructure project. You will work with traffic coordinators, engineers, and construction professionals to learn about traffic staging, lane closure planning, permitting, and daily field operations.
What you'll do#
- Assist with the development, implementation, and monitoring of Traffic Management Plans.
- Coordinate lane closures, detours, road restrictions, and traffic staging.
- Conduct field inspections to verify traffic control devices, signage, barriers, and detour routes.
- Monitor traffic control operations to improve safety and construction efficiency.
- Manage traffic permits, approvals, and necessary notifications.
- Coordinate with engineers, superintendents, subcontractors, and municipal authorities.
- Participate in traffic control meetings and planning for traffic shifts.
- Maintain documentation, reports, sketches, and daily records.
- Support incident investigations and corrective actions.
- Assist with public communications regarding road closures and construction activities.
- Track quantities, costs, and productivity for traffic control operations.
- Promote Aecon health, safety, and environmental programs.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a Civil, Construction, or Transportation Engineering program or related technology program.
- Strong interest in traffic management, transportation infrastructure, and public safety.
- Basic understanding of traffic control principles and construction staging.
- Familiarity with engineering drawings, traffic control plans, and construction documents.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Experience with AutoCAD, Bluebeam, Civil 3D, or similar software.
- Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Clear verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and within a team.
- Comfort working in an active construction environment and in various weather conditions.
- Valid Class 5 Driver's License and access to a vehicle.
