About the role#
The Safety Strategy & Operations team at Zoox uses data and computational tools to guide vehicle deployment and policy decisions. As an intern, you will build and deploy internal AI tools and agentic workflows. These tools help safety analysts and operators make consistent, data-driven decisions. You will work at the intersection of AI developer tooling and safety-critical operational systems.
What you'll do#
- Design, prototype, and implement agentic workflows and AI-assisted tools to automate safety evaluations and triage operational signals.
- Characterize the capabilities, edge cases, and failure modes of LLMs and AI workflows to ensure decision aids meet safety-critical reliability thresholds.
- Connect generative AI agents to structured safety databases and operational logs to automate real-time synthesis and risk reporting.
- Collaborate with safety strategists and software engineers to test prototypes in real operational scenarios and iterate based on user feedback.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing a Master’s degree or advanced degree in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, Data Science, or a related engineering field.
- Expected graduation between Fall 2027 and Summer 2028.
- Ability to commit to a full-time, 12-week internship.
- Strong software engineering fundamentals in Python and object-oriented programming.
- Hands-on experience developing and deploying AI tools, LLM APIs, and agentic workflows.
- Critical understanding of AI limitations, hallucinations, and verification methods for decision-making contexts.
- Experience building working prototypes, APIs, or internal web dashboards.
- Ability to relocate to the Bay Area, California, for the internship.
- Note: You must not use proprietary information for thesis or publication outside of Zoox.
- Prior experience with autonomous systems, safety analytics, risk management, evaluation harnesses, or database architectures (SQL/NoSQL) is a plus.
Location & details#
- Location: Foster City, California.
- Modality: Hybrid.
- Employment: Full-time internship.
- Academic status: Must be in good standing and enrolled at an accredited college or university throughout the internship.
