About the role#
As a Poultry Diagnostic Services Intern, you will assist diagnostic laboratory specialists with virus assays that support biologics and biodevice projects. You will work alongside the Poultry Technical Services team to gain experience in commercial poultry vaccine applications and the poultry industry. This role involves routine laboratory work, including sample receipt and processing, as well as data analysis.
What you'll do#
- Assist with sample collection, preparation, handling, and daily lab procedures, including live bird studies.
- Perform molecular assays such as nucleic acid extraction, RT-PCR, qPCR, and gel electrophoresis for virus or bacterial detection.
- Operate automation equipment to improve throughput and efficiency.
- Collaborate with team members to develop and optimize molecular assays.
- Analyze, interpret, and present experimental findings.
- Optimize sample submission workflows within the digital data management platform (LIMS).
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a Bachelor's degree program (sophomore or higher) or a Master's degree in Biological Science, Life Sciences, Animal Science, Poultry Science, Veterinary Medicine, or a related field.
- Basic laboratory skills, including pipetting, micropipetting, and buffer preparation.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, specifically Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a team.
- Self-motivation and organizational skills.
- Willingness to work with live animals and animal tissue specimens.
- Familiarity with nucleic acid extraction, PCR techniques, gel electrophoresis, or data analytics is a plus.
