About the role#
Waymo is looking for a Software Engineer Intern to join the team for the Summer 2027 term. You will work on the core systems that power autonomous vehicles. This position is based in Mountain View, California, and operates on a hybrid schedule. This is a full-time, paid internship.
What you'll do#
- Collaborate with a team to ensure vehicle behavior is safe, smooth, and predictable for everyone on the road.
- Design and implement onboard C++ logic that controls how the Waymo Driver interacts with traffic signals and signs.
- Use large-scale simulation suites to validate software changes. You will evaluate safety, rule compliance, and other performance metrics before any code is deployed.
- Write clean, tested, production-grade code that meets rigorous code review standards and continuous integration requirements.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an MS or PhD program in Computer Science, Robotics, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field.
- Experience programming in C++ with a focus on clean and efficient code.
- A solid grasp of core Computer Science principles, including algorithms, data structures, and computational complexity.
We prefer candidates who have:
- A BS degree in Computer Science, Robotics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
- Experience writing maintainable C++ code within a large-scale codebase.
- Background in developing software for real-time, fault-tolerant, or safety-critical systems.
- Experience working with large-scale data or machine learning applications.

- Compensation: $70 per hour for Master's students and $85 per hour for PhD students.
