About the role#
The Virginia Spaceport Authority Internship Program offers students the opportunity to apply their education to hands-on projects. You will support the technical direction and design of systems across all MARS facilities. This role requires a student currently enrolled or accepted at an accredited institution on at least a half-time basis.
What you'll do#
- Assist in design and system reviews to verify code compliance and performance.
- Work with customers to develop requirements within system operating parameters.
- Collaborate with the Operations and Maintenance Team on system activation, data analysis, and fine tuning.
- Assist in root cause analysis for non-conformances.
- Develop and review 3D models, drawing packages, and technical calculations.
- Create engineering documentation and design review packages.
- Assist in the development of task requirements and plans, including budget and schedule estimates.
- Participate in field inspections and perform walkdowns to verify model dimensions against facility equipment.
- Independently develop solutions for engineered system issues.
What you'll need#
- Bachelor's degree pursuit in Mechanical Engineering, preferably as a rising senior.
- Comprehensive understanding of mechanical engineering basics and 3D modeling.
- Proficiency in Solidworks or comparable software.
- Experience with thermal analysis calculations.
- Willingness to learn complex mechanical and fluidic systems.
- Familiarity with system design, construction, and operation.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, organizational ability, and attention to detail.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, with SharePoint experience preferred.
- Ability to manage time and meet deadlines.
- Professionalism when handling sensitive or confidential information.
- Ability to obtain and maintain NASA credential eligibility.
- Ability to pass a pre-employment background check and drug test.
- Hands-on experience with mechanical system modeling or builds is preferred.
