About the role#
The Mechanisms & Payload team designs, builds, tests, and operates the systems used for in-space manufacturing and reentry testbeds. As an intern, you will work on cross-functional projects that require a mix of programming, mechatronics, structures, and testing. This is a full-time, on-site position based in El Segundo, California, running between January and May 2027. You will work alongside experienced aerospace professionals on projects that contribute directly to our mission.
What you'll do#
- Own or contribute to hardware or software design for spacecraft or payloads.
- Create or support test campaigns and build necessary test stands.
- Perform analysis to support the development and testing of flight hardware.
- Take ownership of projects such as flight mechanisms, microgravity manufacturing payloads, or custom test equipment.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a bachelor's or master's degree program in Materials Science, Mechanical, Computer, or Electrical Engineering.
- Experience with mechanical CAD, preferably NX.
- Experience designing, building, or operating electromechanical hardware like motors, sensors, or gearboxes.
- Basic programming skills, with a preference for Python.
- Comfort using common hand tools and an interest in learning to operate machine tools like lathes or mills.

- Term: Spring 2027 (January to May).
- Modality: Full-time, on-site.
- Compensation: $33.00 per hour, plus a housing stipend and commuter benefits.
- Eligibility: This role requires U.S. person status for export control compliance.
