About the role#
The Coastal Mapping Intern supports research staff at CCOM/JHC with the development, assembly, and deployment of acoustic-based ocean research instruments. This position involves hands-on work with lander systems and provides assistance with equipment organization, field preparation, and data acquisition. This is a paid, full-time, on-site role with a rolling term. Employment is contingent upon the availability of external sponsor funding.
What you'll do#
- Assist with the development, assembly, and testing of acoustic instruments and related components.
- Help with fabrication, wiring, mounting, labeling, and inventory tasks to ensure field readiness.
- Document configurations, parts, and procedures to create repeatable workflows.
- Provide supervised support for field deployment, monitoring, and recovery of instruments.
- Manage equipment transport, checklists, field notes, and post-recovery hardware handling.
- Support data acquisition, instrument status checks, and file organization.
- Maintain workspace organization, track tools, and assist with troubleshooting to advance research operations.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment or background in Environmental Engineering, Biology, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or Computer Science.
- Ability to assist in the assembly of acoustic-based instruments.
- Capacity to support data acquisition and instrument monitoring.
- Commitment to following safety practices and maintaining equipment inventory.
- Skill in documenting procedures for repeatable workflows.
