About the role#
The Preservation Services department at the University of Virginia Library is looking for a student assistant to help maintain the circulating collection. This role supports the library mission by ensuring that books and materials remain available for research and scholarship. You will work 10 hours per week, Monday through Friday, between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. This is a paid position at a rate of $16.71 per hour.
What you'll do#
- Collect and transport library materials to and from the Preservation department.
- Use the collections database to charge and discharge items.
- Perform call number labeling and barcode duplication.
- Create title labels using Word.
- Measure items to order special enclosures from vendors.
- Construct physical enclosures, including pamphlets, tux boxes, and phase boxes.
- Use specialized tools and equipment to perform preservation tasks.
- Engage in precise manual work such as measuring, cutting, folding, and assembling materials.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment as a UVA undergraduate student.
- Federal Work Study eligibility.
- Strong manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination.
- High attention to detail.
- A willingness to learn and develop new skills.
- Ability to work in an environment that requires frequent standing and occasional walking.
- Ability to lift and carry materials weighing up to 25 pounds.
- Interest in hands-on work.
