About the role#
The Substance and Addiction Prevention Branch is hiring a Graduate Student Assistant to join the State Unintentional Drug Overdose Reporting System team. This role supports the California Department of Public Health in tracking fatal drug-related overdoses to inform prevention and treatment strategies. You will work in a hybrid capacity, balancing remote tasks with in-person work at the Sacramento County Coroner’s office.
What you'll do#
- Join the SUDORS team and attend training on data abstraction processes.
- Review and abstract information from death certificates, coroner reports, toxicology reports, and autopsy records.
- Enter collected data into a secure cloud-based platform maintained by the CDC.
- Perform quality control checks on data that has already been abstracted.
- Assist the Epidemiology and Evaluation Unit with other tasks as required.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment as a graduate student in a relevant field, such as Criminal Justice, Psychology, Nursing, Sociology, Public Health, Economics, or Biology.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word.
- Comfort working with sensitive, death-related data.
- Ability to perform in-person work at the Sacramento coroner's office.
- Access to a personal computer, reliable internet, and a secure workspace for remote duties.
Location & details#
- Location: Sacramento, California.
- Work Modality: Hybrid.
- Employment Type: Part-time, temporary, non-benefited student position.
- Compensation: $20.50 to $24.00 per hour.
- Schedule: Flexible hours between 8 AM and 5 PM, Monday through Friday. You may work up to 24 hours per week during the academic year and up to 40 hours per week during academic breaks.
