About the role#
U.S. Bridge is seeking a motivated intern to join the Engineering and Drafting team for a hands-on experience in steel bridge fabrication. This mentored position involves rotating through engineering and drafting departments to build an understanding of how a bridge moves from initial drawings to finished steel. Interns will contribute to live projects while working alongside experienced engineers, drafters, and shop personnel.
What you'll do#
- Tour the fabrication shop to observe CNC machines, drills, saws, and overall shop workflow.
- Learn industry terminology including floor beams, stringers, trusses, connections, splices, and copes.
- Meet with the team to understand how plans become detailed shop drawings and gain an overview of the project lifecycle from bid proposal to shipping.
- Review shop drawings against contract documents to identify key components.
- Assist drafters with releasing shop drawings and related documentation.
- Support engineers with routine calculations and checks, such as bolt counts, paint area, and pay weight summaries.
- Sit in on project meetings, take notes, and help organize project documentation.
- Spend time in the shop connecting drawings to physical steel and learning basic weld symbols.
- Track one or two active projects as a supporting team member through the detailing and fabrication stages.
- Maintain a journal documenting resources and processes learned.
What you'll need#
- Current pursuit of a degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a related field.
- Strong attention to detail, as engineering accuracy is essential for safety.
- A proactive and curious mindset with comfort asking questions to understand the reasoning behind tasks.
- A genuine interest in structural steel fabrication and the bridge industry.
- Willingness to split time between the shop floor and a desk.
- Strong communication skills and comfort working across different departments.
