U.S. Bridge is seeking an intern to join the Engineering and Drafting team for a hands-on experience in steel bridge fabrication. This role offers a rotation through engineering and drafting departments, providing insight into how a bridge transitions from initial drawings to finished steel. This is a mentored position where you will observe fundamental processes before transitioning to supporting live projects alongside engineers, drafters, and shop personnel.
What you'll do#
- Tour the fabrication shop to observe the workflow and equipment, including CNC machines, drills, and saws.
- Learn industry terminology such as floor beams, stringers, trusses, connections, splices, and copes.
- Review shop drawings against contract documents and assist in releasing documentation.
- Support engineers with routine tasks, including bolt counts, paint area calculations, and pay weight summaries.
- Spend time on the shop floor connecting drawings to physical steel and learning basic weld symbols.
- Track one or two active projects through the detailing and fabrication stages.
- Participate in project meetings and maintain a journal of resources and processes learned.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing a degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or Architecture.
- Strong attention to detail, as engineering accuracy is a matter of safety.
- A proactive, curious mindset with a willingness to ask questions and understand the reasoning behind tasks.
- A genuine interest in structural steel fabrication and the bridge industry.
- Willingness to split time between the shop floor and a desk.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work across departments.
