Malware Research Intern

About the role#

Trend Micro Research is seeking a Malware Research Intern to join the team. This role focuses on threat hunting, analyzing malware samples, and identifying malware communication methods. You will support a global customer base by contributing to technical data feeds and research products.

What you'll do#

• Monitor security industry news and data sources to perform threat hunting and identify active malware.
• Reverse-engineer malware samples to uncover communication mechanisms and analyze network traffic.
• Develop Snort signatures based on malware analysis.
• Create documentation that outlines malware behavior and detection strategies.
• Communicate research findings to team members, management, and customers.
• Work with the team to refine analysis and response processes.

What you'll need#

• Current enrollment in a post-secondary program in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Security, or a related field.
• Strong interest in malware analysis and threat hunting, ideally demonstrated through personal projects or self-directed learning.
• Ability to analyze and describe complex application behaviors.
• Strong problem-solving skills with high attention to detail and personal quality assurance.
• Proficient English communication skills in both written and oral formats.
• Ability to work independently as a self-starter while contributing effectively to a team.
• Preferred technical knowledge includes Windows and Linux operating systems, reverse engineering tools like IDA Pro or Ghidra, and networking protocols such as TCP/IP, HTTP, and SMB.
• Familiarity with scripting languages like Python or PowerShell, and low-level languages like C/C++ or assembly is an asset.
