About the role#
Trend Micro Research is seeking a Malware Research Intern to join the team in Toronto. This role focuses on learning the essential skills required for threat hunting, malware sample analysis, and the detection of malware communication mechanisms. You will support a global customer base by contributing to technical data feeds and research products.
What you'll do#
- Perform threat hunting by monitoring security industry news and publications to identify active malware threats.
- Reverse-engineer malware samples to identify communication mechanisms and analyze network traffic to develop Snort signatures.
- Produce detailed documentation describing malware behavior and detection strategies.
- Communicate research findings to team members, management, and customers.
- Collaborate with the team to refine analysis and response processes.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a post-secondary program in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Cybersecurity, Data Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
- A strong interest in malware analysis and threat hunting.
- Proficiency in English, with strong written and oral communication skills.
- High attention to detail, strong problem-solving abilities, and the capacity for personal QA.
- Ability to work as a self-starter with minimal supervision while functioning well within a team.
- Preferred technical knowledge includes Windows and Linux operating systems, reverse engineering tools (such as IDA Pro or Ghidra), and networking protocols (TCP/IP, HTTP, FTP, SMTP, SMB).
- Familiarity with scripting languages (Python, Ruby, Perl, PowerShell, Bash) and low-level programming (C/C++ or assembly) is considered an asset.
