About the role#
Thomson Reuters Labs in Toronto is looking for an Applied Research Intern to focus on Machine Learning and Natural Language Processing. You will join an interdisciplinary team that experiments, builds, and delivers data-driven AI solutions. This role supports our tax, accounting, legal, and news segments by developing new products and technologies. We look for candidates who can translate research into working prototypes and contribute to the full model development lifecycle.
What you'll do#
- Experiment and develop by building, testing, and delivering high-quality solutions throughout the model development lifecycle.
- Collaborate with a cross-functional, global team of experts in engineering, design, and research.
- Innovate by exploring new approaches, learning new technologies, and contributing ideas to solve real-world challenges.
What you'll need#
- PhD student or recent graduate, or an MSc recent graduate in a discipline such as NLP, IR, ML, Statistics, Computer Science, or Mathematics.
- Practical experience building NLP, IR, or ML systems from ideation to implementation.
- Proficiency in Python, deep learning, and agentic frameworks.
- Familiarity with cloud tools such as Amazon AWS, MS Azure, or Google Cloud.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills for explaining complex AI solutions to diverse audiences.
- Software engineering skills for prototyping and experience with code collaboration and versioning systems like Github.

- This is a full-time, paid internship based on-site in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
- The preferred duration for this position is 8 months.
- This role is offered on a rolling basis.
