About the role#
The Lamkin Research Assistant supports the Jail Death Accountability Project at The University of Tulsa. This role involves investigative work into cases of fatal medical neglect and abuse in jails. You will work on records requests, case documentation, and family outreach.
What you'll do#
- Draft, serve, and track open-records requests sent to jails, medical examiners, and county officials.
- Keep the project case database updated with statuses and deadlines.
- Use public records, people-search tools, and obituaries to find next of kin and potential witnesses.
- Review incident reports, autopsy reports, and other project documents to help prioritize cases.
- Conduct legal research on case law and state open-records statutes.
- Assist with interview preparation.
What you'll need#
- You must be a current law student at The University of Tulsa.
- Strong organizational skills and motivation.
- Ability to maintain discretion and professionalism when handling sensitive information.
- An interest in criminal justice, civil rights, or public-interest legal work.
- Familiarity with databases or FOIA practice is helpful but not required.
