About the role#
This 10-week summer internship at the Minnesota Star Tribune provides an opportunity for college seniors and graduate students to gain experience in a major-market newsroom. Interns work from our Minneapolis office and receive a pay rate of $21.25 per hour. The term runs from early June to early August.
What you'll do#
- Collaborate with journalists across the newsroom to report, analyze, and present stories.
- Make complex information understandable and engaging for our readers.
- Create graphics for breaking news on short deadlines.
- Develop ambitious, long-term projects over several weeks.
- Work regularly from the Star Tribune office.
What you'll need#
- A journalism background or a demonstrated interest in the field.
- Solid news judgment and curiosity about local and regional issues.
- Experience using data to answer questions or tell stories.
- Working knowledge of at least one data analysis tool, such as spreadsheets, R, or Python.
- Familiarity with or interest in learning tools like SQL or OpenRefine.
- Experience creating data visualizations with software such as Datawrapper, Flourish, Adobe Illustrator, or QGIS.
- Basic knowledge of HTML and CSS, with some familiarity with JavaScript being a plus.
- Interest in user experience, accessibility, and design for mobile and desktop audiences.
- A valid driver’s license.
- The ability to conduct yourself in a professional manner.
- Legal authorization to work in the U.S. without sponsorship.
