About the role#
The Space Enterprise Design and Optimization Department focuses on the design, modeling, and analysis of space systems. As a graduate intern, you will provide technical expertise to support the analysis and design of current and future space architectures. You will work both independently and as part of broader department teams to conduct technical deep dives, trade studies, and performance assessments.
What you'll do#
- Apply technical skills to real-world problems in constellation design, multi-objective optimization, and astrodynamics.
- Develop, mature, and use analysis software tools for modeling and simulation tasks.
- Conduct technical deep dives, trade studies, and performance assessments.
- Develop and present reports and presentations to communicate analysis results and provide recommended solutions.
- Collaborate with personnel across multiple locations.
- Manage multiple, simultaneous projects.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in a Master’s or Ph.D. program in aerospace, astronautical, or mechanical engineering, physics, operations research, mathematics, or a related field.
- Availability to work full-time for at least 10 weeks outside of your university term.
- Ability to return to your degree program after the internship.
- Coursework or experience in astrodynamics, orbital mechanics, and space-based modeling or simulation.
- Proficiency in Python, MATLAB, C, or C++.
- Ability to work well independently and in teams.
- US citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret/SCI security clearance.
- Submission of transcripts.

- Locations: El Segundo, California; Chantilly, Virginia; or Colorado Springs, Colorado.
- Work modality: On-site (4 or more days per week).
- Employment: Full-time internship.
