About the role#
TAP Engineering is looking for a Mechanical Engineering Intern to join our hardware team in Columbia, Maryland. This is a hands-on position where you will spend your time designing, building, and testing hardware. You will work alongside mechanical and electrical engineers to support the development of electronic products, moving projects from initial concepts to functional fixtures on the bench.
What you'll do#
- Design test fixtures, brackets, mounts, and setup hardware using SolidWorks.
- Fabricate parts and assemblies using 3D printers, hand tools, and basic shop equipment.
- Support outsourced machining and sheet metal fabrication tasks.
- Build, wire, and configure test setups.
- Conduct environmental and functional qualification tests, including vibration testing.
- Assist engineers with executing test plans and capturing test data.
- Create and revise 3D models and 2D drawings.
- Support prototype builds, mechanical assembly, and design verification activities.
- Participate in design reviews and suggest improvements for hardware and test methods.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an accredited Bachelor's program in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
- Working knowledge of SolidWorks or similar 3D CAD software.
- Hands-on experience from coursework projects, competition teams, makerspace work, personal builds, or shop experience.
- Comfort using hand tools, fasteners, and following shop safety practices.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- U.S. citizenship is required.
- Eligibility and willingness to obtain a DoD Secret security clearance.

- This role is based on-site in Columbia, MD.
- You will work approximately 20 hours per week.
- The position is paid and follows a rolling term.
