About the role#
This internship provides pre-professional experience at Garcia House, a residential substance use treatment program. You will gain exposure to mental health and substance use disorder treatment through structured observation and supervised learning. This role is designed to meet field placement requirements for undergraduate students interested in behavioral health careers. Please note this is an unpaid position.
What you'll do#
- Complete a Value-Added Project and present it to the interdisciplinary team.
- Participate in orientation to SummitStone Health Partners, Garcia House, and the Acute Services Division.
- Observe client admissions, orientations, treatment progression, and discharge processes.
- Shadow Residential Counselors during daily programming and client engagement activities.
- Shadow Case Managers during care coordination, resource navigation, and discharge planning.
- Observe clinical assessments, individual therapy, group therapy, and treatment planning meetings.
- Observe nursing, medical, occupational therapy, and peer support services.
- Attend interdisciplinary treatment team meetings and staff meetings.
- Assist staff with non-clinical administrative duties and program organization.
- Observe documentation workflows and electronic health record practices.
- Participate in therapeutic milieu activities and co-facilitate educational or recreational groups under supervision.
- Participate in regular supervision meetings and reflective learning activities.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in a Bachelor's degree program in Psychology, Social Work, Human Services, Sociology, Criminal Justice, Public Health, or a related behavioral health field.
- Your college or university must have an active articulation agreement with SummitStone Health Partners.
- Eligibility to receive internship credit through your school.
- An interest in behavioral health, substance use treatment, or community mental health.
- An essay (250-500 words) addressing one of the provided prompts regarding your perspective on recovery or your role in supporting it.
