About the role#
Summer Consultants is hiring Mechanical Engineering Interns for the summer of 2027. This role focuses on the mechanical and plumbing systems that keep buildings safe and functional. You will work on projects involving the renovation and modernization of federal, institutional, higher education, and historic facilities. You will gain experience by working alongside engineers in the office and during field surveys.
What you'll do#
- Support mechanical and plumbing design work for renovation and existing-building projects.
- Participate in field surveys to document existing building conditions and systems.
- Assist with HVAC and plumbing calculations, equipment selection, and ductwork or piping layouts.
- Translate survey data and calculations into project drawings and design documentation.
- Use Revit and AutoCAD to support project tasks.
- Coordinate with engineers and designers across different disciplines.
- Ask questions, apply feedback, and take on more responsibility as your skills grow.
- Help solve client problems with precision and follow-through.
What you'll need#
- Completed at least two years toward a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or Architectural Engineering with an HVAC focus.
- A genuine interest in HVAC, plumbing, and building systems.
- Curiosity about how buildings are constructed, maintained, and modified.
- Willingness to spend time in the field surveying existing conditions.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Experience with AutoCAD and Revit is preferred.
- Ability to support day-long field surveys, which may involve walking 10,000 to 20,000 steps, climbing ladders, or bending in various building environments.
- Ability to obtain site access at client locations, including federal facilities.
