About the role#
Summer Consultants is hiring Mechanical Engineering Interns for Summer 2027. This role is for students who want to see how classroom concepts translate into real designs for federal, institutional, and historic facilities. You will work alongside experienced engineers on technical, hands-on projects that focus on the renovation and modernization of existing buildings.
What you'll do#
- Support mechanical and plumbing design work for renovation projects.
- Participate in field surveys to document existing building conditions and systems.
- Assist with HVAC and plumbing calculations, equipment selection, and layout design.
- Translate survey data and project constraints into design documentation and drawings.
- Use Revit and AutoCAD to support project tasks.
- Coordinate with engineers and designers across different disciplines.
- Ask questions, apply feedback, and take on more responsibility as your skills grow.
- Solve client problems with precision and follow-through.
What you'll need#
- Completed at least two years of a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering (HVAC focus), or Mechanical Engineering Technology.
- Genuine interest in HVAC, plumbing, and building system renovations.
- Curiosity about how buildings are constructed, operated, and modified.
- Willingness to spend significant time in the field surveying conditions.
- Ability to work in various environments, including both conditioned and unconditioned spaces.
- Capacity to perform field tasks such as walking long distances, climbing ladders, and kneeling.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Experience with AutoCAD and Revit is preferred.
- Ability to obtain site access for client locations, including federal facilities.
