About the role#
SME is seeking a Civil Engineering Co-op for a full-time position based in Lansing, Michigan. This program begins in mid-May 2027 and runs through late November or early December 2027. You will participate in an initial orientation and training period followed by on-the-job mentorship with full-time staff. This role provides exposure to various construction techniques and project types, allowing you to interact with contractors, construction managers, and design professionals.
What you'll do#
- Support field construction quality control activities.
- Assess and evaluate project materials, including soils, concrete, and asphalt.
- Assist engineering staff with field evaluations and quality control testing.
- Learn to interpret and adhere to project specifications.
- Gain practical experience in consulting engineering practices.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a Civil Engineering program.
- Basic computer literacy for report generation and communication.
- A valid driver's license and a good driving record.
- Ability to work outside at construction sites in various weather conditions.
- Physical ability to stand, stoop, kneel, and walk on uneven terrain for long periods.
- Capability to lift and carry equipment and samples weighing up to 60 pounds.
- Strong attention to detail and a problem-solving mindset.
- Effective written and oral communication skills.
- A commitment to safety and an enthusiasm for learning.
