About the role#
The Lab Technologist (Intern or Co-Op) supports research and development activities through hands-on laboratory testing, product evaluation, and quality assurance. You will work alongside scientists to test drilling fluid products and technologies. This role provides practical experience in an industrial laboratory environment and helps advance the development of new chemical products. You will receive mentorship as you develop your research capabilities and learn how laboratory results inform customer solutions.
What you'll do#
- Support research and development for drilling fluid products.
- Perform laboratory testing to evaluate product performance.
- Assist with the development and refinement of analytical methods and testing procedures.
- Conduct QA/QC evaluations of standard and alternative products.
- Prepare samples, solutions, and materials for experiments.
- Collect, organize, and document experimental observations and testing results.
- Analyze data and assist with the preparation of technical reports.
- Maintain clear and accurate laboratory records and notebooks.
- Support the receipt, labeling, storage, and disposal of laboratory samples.
- Perform routine cleaning, inspection, and maintenance of laboratory equipment.
- Complete Field Level Hazard Assessments and maintain a safe workspace.
- Record project hours and support additional research projects as assigned.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related physical science program.
- Availability for a long-term internship or co-op placement.
- Foundational knowledge of chemistry, chemical systems, and scientific testing.
- Previous experience working in a laboratory environment.
- Familiarity with laboratory practices, chemical handling, and instrumentation.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Ability to follow established testing procedures, SOPs, and safe work practices.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Comfort working both independently and as part of a technical team.
- Demonstrated curiosity and initiative regarding applied research and product development.
- A strong commitment to workplace safety.
Location & details#
- Location: Calgary, Alberta.
- Term: Summer 2027 (May to August). Co-op and internship positions may extend up to 16 months depending on program requirements.
- Modality: On-site.
- Status: Full-time and paid.
