About the role#
Seattle Sounders FC and Seattle Reign FC are seeking a Legal Extern for the Spring 2027 term. This role supports the in-house legal counsel for both clubs. You will gain hands-on experience in a professional sports environment and develop practical skills in sports law. This is an unpaid academic externship, and you must be eligible to receive credit through your law school.
What you'll do#
- Research legal topics including labor and employment, intellectual property, data privacy, security compliance, and league regulations.
- Assist in drafting, reviewing, and analyzing agreements for sponsorships, vendors, operations, and marketing.
- Support counsel in ensuring compliance with applicable laws, league rules, and organizational policies.
- Help prepare internal policies, presentations, and resources for club staff.
- Work with various departments to understand and support their legal needs.
- Shadow counsel during meetings, negotiations, and strategy discussions.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an accredited law school program, with 2L or 3L status preferred.
- Ability to receive academic credit for the externship.
- An executed affiliation agreement between your university and Seattle Sounders prior to your start date.
- Excellent interpersonal and oral communication skills.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Ability to handle confidential information with professionalism and discretion.
- A collaborative mindset and a willingness to learn.
- An interest in sports law, business law, or in-house practice.
Location & details#
- This position is based in Renton, Washington.
- The role follows a hybrid schedule, with a minimum of 3 days per week required in the office.
- You must reside within Washington state upon the date of hire.
- The schedule requires flexibility, including availability for evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
- Physical requirements include the ability to work outdoors, stand for long periods, and lift up to 20 pounds.
