    About the role#

    The KPBS Penner Fellow/Assistant News Producer is a one-year, part-time fellowship focused on political reporting. You will join the KPBS Public Matters team to create content about politics, democracy, and civic engagement in the San Diego region. This role supports broadcast production for television, radio, and podcasts while helping to improve coverage of local governance and issues that affect San Diegans. You will work under the direction of the Public Matters Editor alongside the broader newsroom staff.

    What you'll do#

    • Write broadcast news copy and post stories to the KPBS website.
    • Fact-check stories for accuracy and spelling.
    • Find, shoot, and edit video and audio content.
    • Request or create graphics to support news segments.
    • Conduct research and contact sources for ongoing stories.
    • Assist with special productions, including live remote broadcasts and election coverage.
    • Manage administrative tasks such as record keeping, correspondence, phone calls, and equipment maintenance.
    • Attend team meetings and handle other duties as assigned.

    What you'll need#

    • A high school diploma or equivalent.
    • Previous experience in an office or administrative environment.
    • Ability to meet deadlines and make effective decisions.
    • Capacity to learn new procedures quickly and follow directions.
    • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work cooperatively with others.
    • Proficiency in basic mathematical calculations.
    • A bachelor’s degree is preferred, as is experience in video/audio editing, shooting, and recording.
    • Experience in TV, radio, or print news writing is preferred.
    • An interest in journalism, reporting, and storytelling regarding local issues is preferred.

    Location & details#

    • This position is based in San Diego, California. Candidates must reside in California and live within a commutable distance from the university.
    • This is a part-time role at 20 hours per week, with work scheduled on weekdays.
    • The position is paid at $17.75 per hour.
    • You may work under a hybrid or remote schedule depending on the specific needs of the role.
    • This is a temporary appointment with a one-year maximum duration.
