About the role#
This position supports a research project at the Naval Information Warfare Center, Pacific (NIWC PAC) focused on evaluating water quality and environmental risks. You will assist in the development of a machine learning pipeline to help Navy commanders assess environmental hazards and make operational decisions. This is a paid, part-time student role, limited to 20 hours per week.
What you'll do#
- Prepare satellite, buoy, and industrial or municipal spatiotemporal data for analysis.
- Perform exploratory data analysis and generate data visualizations.
- Assist with the coding, testing, and debugging of a machine learning pipeline.
- Create data dictionaries, reports, and slide decks summarizing analysis results.
- Conduct literature searches related to Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) practices.
- Submit monthly status reports and bi-weekly time reports.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment as a Junior or Senior undergraduate student.
- Academic background in Mathematics, Computer Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, or Environmental Engineering.
- Demonstrated Python programming experience.
- Experience meeting at least 50% of the task requirements.
- Ability to work independently with minimal oversight.
- US Citizenship is required to meet Department of Defense regulations.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret security clearance.
Location & details#
- This role is based in San Diego, California, and you must reside within a commutable distance of San Diego State University.
- The work is hybrid, with most tasks performed virtually, though you must be available to work at NIWC Pacific Bayside upon request.
- This is a rolling position that will remain open until filled.
