This position supports water contaminant research at the Naval Information Warfare Center, Pacific (NIWC PAC). The work focuses on developing a machine learning pipeline to evaluate water quality, helping Navy commanders assess environmental risks and make informed operational decisions. This is a paid, part-time student role limited to 20 hours per week.
What you'll do#
- Prepare satellite, buoy, and industrial/municipal spatiotemporal data for analysis.
- Perform exploratory data analysis and generate data visualizations.
- Assist with the coding, testing, and debugging of a machine learning pipeline.
- Create data dictionaries, reports, and slide decks of results.
- Conduct relevant literature searches regarding Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) practices.
- Submit required monthly status and bi-weekly time reports.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment as a Junior or Senior undergraduate student.
- Academic background in Mathematics, Computer Science, Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Engineering, or Physics.
- Proficiency in Python programming.
- Relevant coursework or laboratory experience in fields such as Chemistry, Biology, Computer Science, Probability and Statistics, or Environmental Science.
- Ability to work independently and operate under minimal oversight.
- US Citizenship is required to meet Department of Defense regulations.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret security clearance.
Location & details#
- Location: San Diego, California. Candidates must reside in California and live within a commutable distance of San Diego State University.
- Modality: Hybrid, with most work conducted virtually via telework, but must be available to work at NIWC Pacific Bayside upon request.
- Term: Rolling, open until filled.
