About the role#
This role sits within the Robotics Center of Excellence, which functions as the innovation engine for robotics at Rockwell Automation. You will join the UX team embedded in a technical research group to explore how humans and robots interact. This position moves beyond traditional interface design to consider how machines and humans communicate through behavior, voice, gesture, and spatial computing. You will participate in research, interaction prototyping, and the design of new systems for autonomous operations.
What you'll do#
- Contribute to projects focused on human-robot interaction, operator interfaces, and the integration of robots into enterprise tools.
- Lead research efforts by framing questions, designing studies, talking to operators, and turning findings into actionable insights.
- Prototype new interaction modes for robotic systems, including voice, gesture, and chat-based agent control.
- Present work to the team early and often to gather feedback from designers, researchers, and engineers.
- Document your process through case studies, internal reports, and external talks.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a bachelors or advanced degree program.
- Legal authorization to work in Canada.
- Experience designing and running UX research.
- Comfort with coding, prototyping, and large language models.
- Experience with Figma or similar design tools.
- Familiarity with ROS/ROS2 and research repository tools like Dovetail.
- Prototyping experience using React or similar frameworks.
- Background in human factors, HCI, or interaction design research.
- Experience with AR, VR, or spatial computing.
- Ability to parse academic publications and literature.
- Interest in autonomous systems and the future of human-machine interaction.
Location & details#
- This role is based in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada.
- The position is full-time and follows a hybrid work model, with expected in-office days on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays.
- Compensation ranges from $20 to $32 per hour, based on skills and experience.
