About the role#
Progressive Companies offers a paid, full-time summer internship for students interested in urban design and planning. You will join our Planning team to work on projects ranging from downtown and neighborhood master plans to corridor studies. This role involves a mix of research, design, and community engagement. You will work alongside mentors from various disciplines, including architecture, engineering, and landscape architecture, to learn how different fields contribute to community development.
What you'll do#
- Assist with urban design, corridor planning, downtown planning, neighborhood planning, and master planning projects.
- Collaborate with team members across urban design, planning, landscape architecture, architecture, transportation, and engineering.
- Explore design alternatives for streets, public spaces, land use, development, and connectivity.
- Develop graphic presentations, diagrams, renderings, and other visual communication materials.
- Prepare boards, reports, and other materials for clients and the public.
- Research precedent projects, development trends, zoning, transportation systems, and community conditions.
- Assist with public and stakeholder engagement, including workshops and meetings.
- Participate in site visits, design workshops, and client meetings.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in a bachelor’s degree program for Urban Planning, Architecture, or a related field.
- Completion of at least two years of undergraduate study by Summer 2027.
- Experience with basic urban design tasks, such as 2D and 3D conceptual plans or diagrams.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, AutoCAD, and SketchUp.
- Basic familiarity with zoning and building code concepts.
- Strong analytical, design, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Interest in the relationship between people, places, buildings, and streets.
- Experience with Outlook, SharePoint, and Teams is preferred.
- Experience with ArcGIS Pro and community engagement is a plus.
