About the role#
As an Intellectual Property (IP) Intern, you will join the Philips Intellectual Property & Standards team. This role provides an opportunity to gain hands-on experience by working with an international community of IP professionals. You will receive mentorship from IP Counsel while contributing to the strategic management of our patent portfolio.
What you'll do#
- Define the characteristics of a healthy patent portfolio and assess how to distribute patents across current products, new technologies, and future opportunities.
- Analyze how patent strategies differ between consumer and regulated healthcare markets.
- Explore how defensive and exclusive IP models impact the structure of a patent portfolio.
- Review literature and develop guidelines for maintaining a cost-efficient patent portfolio.
- Identify proof points to validate your guidelines and present your findings in a final report.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an undergraduate or graduate degree program in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technology field.
- Basic knowledge of intellectual property concepts.
- Strong critical thinking skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Excellent analytical capabilities and a professional drive.
- Strong teamwork and collaboration skills with the ability to communicate effectively at all levels.
Location & details#
- This is a full-time, paid internship for Summer 2027.
- The role is based on-site in San Diego, California.
- You must reside in or within commuting distance to San Diego, CA.
- US work authorization is required. We do not provide sponsorship for this position.
