About the role#
This internship focuses on evaluating waste diversion initiatives during the Wake Forest University fall football season. You will help Pepsi Bottling Ventures and the university understand how to improve beverage container recovery, recycling visibility, and fan participation at athletic events. This is an exploratory role designed to identify practical recommendations for future sustainability efforts.
What you'll do#
- Support planning for a small-scale exploratory waste diversion pilot during the football season.
- Observe game-day recycling and waste collection practices during select home football games.
- Engage with university partners, volunteers, and event personnel to understand current practices and identify improvement opportunities.
- Collect data on recycling station visibility, fan behavior, and operational barriers.
- Summarize observations in a clear, organized format.
- Prepare a concise end-of-semester summary of findings and recommendations for leadership.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment as an undergraduate or graduate student in environmental studies, business, engineering, communications, sports marketing, public policy, or a related field.
- Strong communication and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently within a limited weekly time commitment.
- Interest in sustainability, recycling, waste reduction, or event-based environmental initiatives.
- Basic proficiency in Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint.
- Availability to support select Wake Forest home football games.

- Work Modality: On-site.
- Commitment: Maximum of 10 hours per week.
